In iOS 7, Apple gave the iPhone the most radical makeover in its history. The new software is powerful, sleek, and a perfect companion to the iPhone 5s and 5c—but it’s wildly different. Fortunately, David Pogue is back with an expanded edition of his witty, full-color guide: the world’s most popular iPhone book.

The important stuff you need to know:

  • The iPhone 5s. This book unearths all the secrets of the newest iPhone—faster chip, dual-color flash, fingerprint scanner, and more—and its colorful companion, the 5c.
  • The iOS 7 software. Older iPhones gain Control Center, AirDrop, iTunes Radio, free Internet phone calls, and about 197 more new features. This book covers it all.
  • The apps. That catalog of 1,000,000 add-on programs makes the iPhone’s phone features almost secondary. Now you’ll know how to find, manage, and exploit those apps.

The iPhone may be the world’s coolest computer, but it’s still a computer, with all of a computer’s complexities. iPhone: The Missing Manual is a funny, gorgeously illustrated guide to the tips, shortcuts, and workarounds that will turn you, too, into an iPhone addict.

Wow! Apple should give this book away to all IPhone owners!
By Tom Spott
The author makes the statement that calling the IPhone “a phone is practically an insult” and I couldn’t agree more. So, given the chance to read this book and find out even more ways my IPhone can make life easier, I jumped at it. I was worried that the book’s nearly 600 pages might be a bit daunting. However, I started on page 1 to sort of see how it would go, and before I knew it, I found myself on page 80. I had my IPhone at my side and would read a feature and check it out. What fun! For example, I found a level on the phone. Now, if I see a picture that looks a little crooked I can whip out my IPhone and fix it.

When you buy an IPhone, Apple doesn’t give you a hefty manual. When I bought the gadget, I had to hunt and peck my way to learn how to use it. This book showed me EVERYTHING about the phone – step by step in a cookbook fashion. The book is very current to IOS 7. So, all the new features of the latest operating system are at your fingertips. The book It also is laid out very nicely, making it and easy to follow. The first 30 pages or so just tell you what you are physically holding in your hand. Okay, maybe in too much detail sometimes – like how they make the “gorilla glass” at Corning Glass Works (entertaining for trivia types). The index is generous with lots of references.

The book is extremely easy to read - I didn’t feel some techie was talking down to me at all. The book covered everything about the phone and then some. I have had my IPhone for over a year I found lots of features in the book I never even imagined were on the phone. I feel I am living in a sci-fi fantasy world sometimes when I use it. One of these days maybe Apple will figure out how to beam me up with an IPhone.

The best feature the phone has for me, and the book made it super easy to set up, was “face time.” You can call that special someone that who also has an IPhone and actually look at his or her face (or whatever the phone is pointing at) while having a conversation. Now, if Apple can just figure out how to let us smell the apple pie in the oven at a friend’s house while talking to the friend, we will really be spoiled.

Oh, and This Missing Manual had lots of practical advice, too. For example, how you might stretch your battery life a bit when you can’t get to a recharger right away (shut off Blue Tooth and Wi-Fi). It also explained very well what to do if you lose your IPhone (you can erase the whole thing remotely and render it useless to the thief).

In conclusion – I got a lot out of this book. If you have an IPhone, get the book – you will be glad you did.

OH MY GOSH, NEWS TO IPHONE 5 5S THIS BOOK IS A MUST
By O. Pipitt
I have just had this book in possession for half an hour and am going to cancel a class I signed up for to learn about this iPhone 5S.
This is my first phone with Internet and all the goodies, I was totally lost, although my husband has had the 5 for sometime he couldn't even answer some of my questions…..200 minutes of looking them up in the book, found my answers, how to do it with very easy directions, and learned many other cool things in the process. I am 70 years old…GET THE BOOK….

THE iPhone Manual of the Paradise. Must-Have for ALL iPhone Users!
By Kayla Rigney
Back in the day of the Mac SE, Apple products came with complete manuals -- even keyboard manuals. Now, we get a Quick Start Guide. But what happens *after* we start quickly? iPhone: The Missing Manual takes you where you never knew your iPhone could go -- that's what!

PROS:
1) iPhone: The Missing Manual starts with "what's in the box" and really explains your iPhone from the ground up.
2) My iPhone has a SIM card slot??? Who knew!!!
3) Covers the iPhone 4, 4S, 5S, 5C, and iOS7.
4) In depth explanation of everything your iPhone *does* besides general telephony-- photos, video, messaging of all kinds, Twitter, FaceBook, Face Time, iTunes & iTunes Radio, Calendars, Maps, Mail, Gmail, Skype, etc.
4a) Great camera instructions for both video and still photography.
5) Compete review of Apple's iPhone accessibility software, including the amazing Assistive Touch for folks who need to use one finger, toe, or a mouth or foot held stylus. We're talking Assistive Touch allows one to work *with* one's unique *gestures!* 9 (Or in my case, twinges.) Yay!
6) Full color illustrations and easy-to-read text that assumes you're intelligent AND you'd love to know more about what your iPhone can do for you.
7) Covers Bluetooth tech and headsets.
